It depends on whether you want quantity or quality. The number of graduates is not as important as the quality of the gaduates. I believe that we cannot just punch out engineering degrees and expect to have qualified engineers. Some graduates that I have been interviewing, many from "renowned" schools, are being educated poorly and being given purely esoteric degrees. I interviewed one engineer and when I asked what his degree was, he told me he had a BS in "Engineering Management". When I asked a technical question in mechanical engineering, he was unable to answer.
Precisely how many "BS in Engineering Management" do we really need? How pray tell does an "Engieering Manager" help or mentor a Mechanical Engineer, or direct him if he has no or only a suprficial knowledge in Mechanical Engineering?
Our primary and secondary schools can barely graduate literate students, so with this for fodder, how will we educate competent engineers? I have been to colleges and walking through the halls I see classrooms set aside for "Remedial Math, Remedial English......... Unfortunately some of our modern day engineers, graduated from schools like this, are at about a High school Level when they enter the work force.
Other nations notwithstanding, if we continue to dilute our workforce with graduateds like this, subsidies will do nothing for our safety or sovergnity.
What do you think the BS in Mechanical Engineering or a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, will do to the value of YOUR degree if we allow the Educational System to continue to dilute the workforce with useless or inferior degrees?
Excuse me but, I have 50 years experience in Mechanical Engienering, I have owned a company that has put equipment on the Space Station, designed and built cutting edge cryogenic and scientific equipment and I cannot find a decent engieneer. I lost both parents in high school, worked my way through college and I am better for it. Remember, "If it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger". I WANTED to be an engineer, it was hard, it didn't kill me and it made me stronger. I am 70 years old and I work 12 hours a day. I love engieering, it is my passion. We need more engineers with passion, not whiney kids expecting to have a red carpet rolled out for them because they have a degree.
