About your question, "My question was how does everyone manage those custom projects that invariably come along"
Try the "PDM Works" utlities, all of designing softwares have it inside,( PDM works for solid works, and Catia)
That was simply for break the big projects to sevral and seperated parts and share them between the work groups (Mechanical, Electrical, ...)
